Survival Guide for Geeks
geek (geek) n.-a person often of an intellectual bent who is disapproved of.
One hears the word "geek" countless times throughout their life, numerous times throughout the day. What comes to mind when this word is heard? That this person is a loser, a nerd, a brain, etc. Why is it that this word describing smart people who are often frowned upon negative? Are people not allowed to have intelligence at all? Though whether or not this is something that is only in high school, I do not know.
When I hear the word, I think of someone who is generally entertained by sci-fi and fantasy genres of television, movies, and books, such as Star Trek, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, etc. Maybe this person enjoys math and science also, or even roleplaying. To me, this is not a bad thing. Maybe I'm biased because I, yes, I, Molly Turner (in case you haven't figured it out yet), am a geek.
There. I said it. And you know what? I'm proud of it. I love, and I mean LOVE, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Battlestar Galactica, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly, Serenity (the RPG and movie), Smallville, and I probably left something out.
I am of the opinion that you cannot make fun of something unless it is a part of you. For example, I, having lived in Oklahoma for my entire life, can make jokes about farmers and their ardor for the death penalty. Someone who has only lived here a short time, however, would annoy me to no end with the same joke. Perhpas I'm prejudiced, or a snob, or whatever you would like to call it, but that's how I feel.
One thing I joke often about is my being a huge geek. And I am. (If this isn't clear to you, please refer once more to the paragraph above the last and contemplate on it, or just read this blog.) So, when people tell me I'm a geek, it tires me. I know this, but I don't necessarily want someone else making fun of me for it. Just like my dad probably doesn't want Sarah and I to make fun of him for being bald.
And thus I come to the whole reason I posted this entry in the first place. Because someone I know, who calls me a geek often, brought this to light. My advice? Be surrounded by your own kind. Find people to hang out with who don't "disapprove of" spending Saturday nights playing Star Wars Trivial Pursuit and watching Family Guy, playing Halo, or even roleplaying. Only through this method can you truly be happy and comfortable, and maybe, just maybe, survive in the world.
